Allegations made against Pradaxa, a newly-developed heart medication, have resulted in a class action lawsuit against the drug manufacturer as well as lawsuits filed against attending physicians.

Despite its notable ability to control blood sugar levels, Invokana has some potentially serious side effects:

  • Amputation – Clinical trials have found that Invokana users are twice as likely to suffer from lower limb amputation as compared to patients using a placebo. The risks are even higher for patients who have already suffered from a previous amputation. Invokana users should look for signs – infections in lower limbs, tenderness, sores – talk to a doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms.
  • Ketoacidosis – When the body is unable to produce enough insulin, ketoacidosis develops. Without enough insulin, the body breaks down fat as an alternative source of energy, which in turn produces a buildup of toxic acids in the bloodstream known as ketones. When untreated, excess ketones in the blood result in ketoacidosis, which can lead to diabetic coma, hospitalization, and death.
  • Fournier’s Gangrene – A life-threatening, flesh-eating bacterial infection of the skin, the side effect of SGLT-2 inhibitors can be deadly if not treated immediately. Men are particularly at risk of developing the infection.

Starting in 2015, the FDA began to release multiple public safety announcements, warning the public of the links between Invokana/SGLT-2’s and these dangerous adverse effects. Contact usContact Us today to learn more.

Actos was originally developed as a solution for adult persons with type 2 diabetes or blood sugar control problems. A study by the Food and Drug Administration found that over the three-year period that Vioxx was on the market, thousands of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths could have been avoided if another competing drug had been prescribed. • Gastrointestinal problems and vomiting
  • Cold flashes
  • Pain in their muscles or bones
  • Trouble controlling leg movement
  • Issues with sleeping

Truvada is a mixture of emtricitabine and tenofovir and is prescribed in combination with other therapies for HIV treatment. If HIV is left untreated, it can develop into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Truvada works by decreasing the level of virus present in the body to bolster the patient’s immune system. Truvada lowers the risk of developing complications associated with HIV, but there is currently no cure for HIV or AIDS. Truvada may also be used to prevent HIV in high-risk populations. When used to prevent exposure, Truvada is referred to a PrEP.

The FDA urges people who take Uloric to seek emergency medical attention if they experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain

Ironically potential Zostavax side effects includes shingles, the very same disease it is supposed to prevent, and chickenpox. Both of these illnesses can have serious health complications. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Merck add “shingles” to the possible side effects from Zostavax. Zostavax injuries can be long-term and include stroke, lupus, meningitis, and other serious health conditions.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Patients taking the blood thinner heart medication Plavix (clopidogrel) are at an increased risk of a recurrent heart attack when taking PPIs. The increased risk of another heart attack was 20 percent. Some experts believe the increased risk of a heart attack is not just in patients taking Plavix or have had a previous heart attack. PPIs inhibit the blood thinning properties of clopidogrel, which may lead to a serious or fatal blood clot.

IVC Filters

IVC filters are implanted just below the kidneys in the interior vena cafa and are designed to capture embolisms before they reach the pulmonary arteries in patients who have not responded well to traditional anticoagulation therapy. Intended for short-term use only, these devices are not supposed to interfere with normal blood flow, allowing instead the body to deal with an embolism over the course of a few days without placing the patient in additional danger. However, IVC filters pose risks of their own and some studies have called into questions their efficacy even when not defective

Surgical Staplers

Unfortunately, surgical staplers fail all too often. The FDA recently reported that between 2011-2018, there were 109,997 reports of surgical stapler malfunctions, including 11,181 serious injuries and 412 deaths. To put those numbers in context, that is more than 4 serious injuries a day caused by surgical stapler malfunctions, and approximately one death per week.

Smith & Nephew Hip

People have filed Smith & Nephew hip replacement lawsuits because the manufacturer’s metal-on-metal devices led to metallosis and other serious complications.
